Using both rankings and grosses should eliminate bias that might arise from just using one of those values. If only the grosses were used, the results wouldn’t reflect the fluctuations in box office takings across different years; e.g. Frozen took less money than Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, but both were the highest grossing films in their respective years. Similarly, if only the rankings were used, it wouldn’t reflect the difference in grosses between films ranked next to each other; e.g. in 2015, the difference in takings between the films ranked 1 and 2 was nearly $400 million but the difference between the films ranked 31 and 32 was only approximately $4.5 million. I’ll explain the method for calculating the 1st set of scores i.e. the set that considers the top 7 films from each studio.
